It's not just your dad's (or grandad's!) sports me It's not just your dad's (or grandad's!) sports memorabilia market anymore...

This week a second private sale of a 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟲 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱 happened, for $𝟮.𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, eclipsing the previous record of $2.5 million set in another private sale this past June. The question is...what if Jordan decides to sign a bunch of these cards, then what happens to the market?

On Wednesday Christie's sold items from the estate of obstetrician GB Espy, who collected sports, entertainment and historical memorabilia. In 2019, Julien's Auctions sold a large chunk of the Espy collection, but he held back some high level memorabilia, offered in this auction.

Highlights included 𝗟𝗼𝘂 𝗚𝗲𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗴'𝘀 𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟵 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘆, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 $𝟮,𝟳𝟭𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬, against the pre-sale estimate of $2,000,000-$4,000,000. It may have not sold for more because of the Iron Horse's ALS, he stopped playing that April, so was at the Series as captain and spectator.

On the other hand, in what is probably a record for a 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗜𝗗 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗱, $𝟭𝟳𝟲,𝟬𝟬𝟬 was paid for 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗲's, who worked in a parachute factory (and discovered by Yank Magazine) during World War II.

The biggest surprise was the sale of $𝟱𝟰𝟴,𝟭𝟬𝟬 paid for a 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟯-𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟰 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗝𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘆. Given that Brady and Montana jerseys have sold in the hundreds of thousands, and this is the only known documented jersey of the Galloping Ghost, it does make sense, but the estimate was $100,000-$150,000.

𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 continues to set records with the $𝟲𝟵𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 paid for his 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, more than $225,000 higher than the recent sales of Willie Mays and Ted Williams Hall Of Fame rings, reflecting his place as a civil rights pioneer.

Will this be a whiff or a knock out? Find out thi Will this be a whiff or a knock out?

Find out this Monday night as we go back in time to appraise a circa 1895 Folk Art Cane with a Boxing motif.

The 1890s was a particularly rich period for American folk art canes, which served as vehicles for personal expression, social commentary, and documentation of pop culture.

Boxing was one of the most popular sports of the late 19th century, especially as the sport transitioned from bare-knuckle to gloved prize-fighting.
